Last weekend saw Team Hilliard host our first family get-together at The Hideaway. It was a fun-filled weekend as we also celebrated the 25th Wedding Anniversary of my cousins. Family travelled home to be part of the celebrations so we were able to have even more of a crowd for our festivities!
It was like a convoy watching everyone arrive. For a few of the crew it was their first visit, which made it even more special. After giving a couple of tours I noticed that everyone kind of ventured off to their our little circles. Of course, it didn’t take the boys long to migrate to the garage. Mike and Matthew were busy bees getting it a little more presentable as it was basically the dumping grounds since the move. We put a drive on to get as many boxes as possible unpacked or stacked away and hidden for the time being. They set up a couple of couches and chairs in the middle directly proportional to the tv. It worked well. All the guys, no matter the age, congregated around whatever sports game was playing Sunday afternoon. The ladies of the group found their spot out in our Abeebo overlooking the River. The teapot(s) were on and they were all happy and in their glory. The girls hung out on the back deck. Once we made sure our supply was stacked, the Mud Shakes and wine came out. What a gorgeous afternoon it was.
Mikey had things in the man-cave under control so I bounced from the deck to the Abeebo and everywhere in between making sure all was right with the world – and it was. Matthew enjoyed spending time with everyone and took turns showing them our grounds, the fish pond, the river and our garden. The strawberries got a good going-over, as did the carrots. Yummy treats, for sure! Marcus was typical Marcus and bounced around all over the place. He was having a blast and was very happy to see his cousins.
All the leftover food from the Anniversary the night before came in really handy for our pot luck. We had coolers and rubbermaids filled with ice and when the time came we laid it all out in the garage and had a free-for-all. It was perfect.
As part of the continuing anniversary festivities, a few of the families wanted to get some pictures done so not long after we all finished eating, the photographer arrived and began snapping away. I don’t know how many hundreds of pictures she took, but there were just as many laughs going on. I’m sure she realized pretty early on that this family is a bunch of fools!! Because Matt and Marcus were busy entertaining (and weren’t really dressed for family pictures) I decided to wait. We’ll have ours taken around the grounds with a few inside sooner rather than later. I think I want to have the trees change colour just a little bit more, first.
Well into the evening most of the crew headed off but not before expressing their enjoyment of the day. We were left with a few cousins who can always be depended on for sticking around. It was nice to finally sit, enjoy a drink and spend some time gabbing and watching Marcus still go full-force in entertainment mode. He danced and hoola-hooped for us while we hung out in the man-cave for a while.
It was really special for us to be able to do this. Sure, we’d have family gatherings before but this was the first one where we really had the room for the family that we have. No one was crowded, the living room wasn’t jammed and everything didn’t end up thrown in the kitchen. It was nice that everyone had their own space and could have different things going on all over.
Our Happy Hideaway got a good workout and I think it passed with flying colours! For an encore I’m told we’re doing a ladies spa night ~ I can’t wait!!!
Until next time..
